Kamishibai Event

On Saturday, June 20 (10:00–11:30 AM), a kamishibai performance was held at the Hon. Shirley Chisholm (Audubon) Branch – Amherst Public Library, Community Room #2, presented by JGB member Mary Hirtzel.

A total of 17 participants from 7 households attended, including 2 non-member households.

The program featured two stories: Kaguya-hime (The Tale of Princess Kaguya) and Sandy Wants To Be Number One. Mary’s warm and engaging narration sparked lively questions from the children, creating a wonderful atmosphere of interaction between the storyteller and her young audience. Following the performance, books from the “Tomato Bunko” lending library were also available for borrowing.

Attendees shared their thoughts afterward:

  • “The children were so happy to have time to play together.”
  • “It was a great opportunity for parents to get to know one another.”
  • “We were able to exchange a lot of useful information.”
  • “We’d love to see this become a regular event!”

The next kamishibai event is planned for the Bon Odori festival in August, where an English-language kamishibai performance will also be featured. If you missed this one, we hope to see you there!
